Costs Prohibit Toll Rate Charges
Replying to a request from the Farmers’ Federation that special telephone toll rates (quarter rates on calls after 10 p.m. and half rates on Sundays), be re-introduced, the Postmaster-General, Mr W. J. Eroadfoot, said that both matters were reviewed in 1947 when the question of restoring pre-war charges and conditions was considered. Because of the substantial increase in wages and rise in cost of equipment generally, it was not practicable to reduce the existing rates and charges.
