1950 Prices Of Apples And Pears For N.Z. Consumers

The average price paid to fruit growers for apples and pears for the 1950 season will be 9/6 a case. This was announced by the Minister of Mai’keting, Mr Holvoake, who said the price would be guaranteed by the Government.

The Minister said the price related to the bare fruit and case. Costs of packing materials (other than cases) were not by the Apple and Pear Marketing Board in addition to the payment of the guaranteed price. Last year, when the same price had been paid, costs of production based on an average crop had been assessed at 9/2 a case. In fact, the crop for 1949 had been below average production, and that had justified a price above the average cost level. This year costs based on an average crop had been assessed at 9/7.85d a case, but it was certain that the crop would exceed that of an average year, probably by 300,000 cases or more, said Mr Holyoake. In those circumstances, and having regard to other criteria which the Act required him to consider when fixing the price, he had decided that a price of 9/6, which was the same as that paid last year on a much smaller crop, would be fair and reasonable.
