ON THE LIBRARY
Sir, —Now that it seems fashionable to voice complaints concerning the administration of the Borough, it should not be out of place to complain a little about the collection of publications, which in Whakatane, is known as the Public Library. This institution is far from up-to-date and it does not appear to improve.
It is known however, that the late Government inaugurated a Country Library service designed to assist libraries such as our own and that this service is still available. It is said that all sorts of books, including the newest and most expensive fiction as well as historical and technical books usually far beyond the resources of an ordinary town library, are available to us through the Country Library Service.
It would cost less than 2/6 per head of town population to obtain this Government Library Service and if this is so perhaps someone can explain why nothing has been done about it. Yours etc., READER. Whakatane, April 17. ' The Whakatane Borou'gh Council has approved the change-over to the Country Library Service in principle and the Finance Committee is to discuss when it can be established in the town at a meeting tonight. Editor.
