Word Ommitted A word was ommitted from an ?rticle on Ohope roads printed in the Beacon on Friday. The passage should have read: It is not only the residents of Ohope who have complained but hundreds of visitors and campers.
Building Permits The 22 building permits issued at Whakatane last month were valued at £13,849 15s. The permits included two for shops, dwellings three, additions to dwellings nine, garages three, garages and tool sheds two, workshop extensions one, tool sheds two.
Card Evening At the weekly 500 card evening of the Whakatane Labour Party held in the Institute Hall Mrs J f Shapley won the women’s section while the booby prize went to Mrs Brown. The men’s section was won by Mr B. Liddell and the booby prize by Mr Connery.
Trucks In Strand The number of buses and trucks parked in prohibited areas in the Strand was mentioned by Cr C. S. Armstrong to the Whakatane Borough Council. Although there were notices erected the vehicles were still parked in the street. This matter was referred to the traffic inspector. Overcoats In Demand With their monthly meeting interrupted by power cuts Whakatane borough councillors suffered further discomfiture on Monday night by the drop in temperatures. As the meeting progressed it got colder and colder with some councillors seeing the meeting out in overcoats.
New Machine Because of the extra amount and greater variety of work that can be done by the machine at an economical cost the Whakatane Borough Council has decided to invest in a new and larger tractor than the one it now has in use. The new machine is expected to be used for most major tasks, excluding heavy quarry and road work.
Water Demand High With the water demand still high the borough water pumping plants were in service every day last month, the inspector, Mr F. Lysaght, reported to the Whakatane Borough Council. He stated that the pumping plants were in fair order while the installation of the new pumping plant had been completed. It had been used on several short runs.
Rugby Coaching School A suggestion that a coaching school be formed in the centre of the Bay of Plenty where Rugby club coaches could be instructed in the fundamental principles of the game and some uninamity reached on play made at the annual meeting of the Opotiki Rugby Sub-Un-ion. This has been forwarded to the Bay of Plenty Union as a recommendation. In The Dark The present evening power cuts take little notice of the organisations that even institute them. On Monday night the Whakatane Borough Council commenced its monthly meeting at 7.30 in the dark and dealt with a very large volume of business before concluding after the 10.30 cut had commenced—in the dark. The meeting carried on by lamplight and finished at 11.30 p.m.
