Houses For Ex-Servicemen

During February 25 State houses were allocated to ex-servicemen in the Waikato-Bay of Plenty area, according to a statement released by the Rehabilitation Department. This now brings the total number given to ex-servicemen in these districts to 1048.

Good Friday fell this year, for the third and last time this century, on April 7, the generally accepted date of the Crucifixion. The balance of opinion seems to be that the Crucifixion took place on Friday, April 7, A.D.. 30. Good Friday fell on that date in 1944 and 1939. but only twice last century in 1882 and 1871. Theft of Saddle Charged with the theft of a sadle valued at £B, at Whakatane, the property of Gilbert Richmond Yeoman, Timi Keropa, Waiotahi, was fined £lO, costs 18s, in the Opotiki Magistrate’s Court. Plenty of Fish Fishermen off the coast of Whakatane over Easter report some Very good catches of fish. One party went from Ohope on Sunday and within a short time had caught 80 schnapper, beside a great variety of other fish. Fishing from a small dinghy the party came back to the shore and unloaded their catch before going out again and filling the boat a second time.

Garden Party

The weight guesing competition of a fruit cake was won by Mrs B. Brosnahan at the garden party conducted by the Bay of Plenty branch of the New Zealand Registered Nurses’ Association at the residence of Mrs F. Prideaux. A pair of towels was won by Mrs S. Hirst who Won the competition for guessing the number of maize seeds in a bottle. The competition of who could hold the most pegs in one hand was won by Mrs Collins,
