SECTIONS FOR BUILDING WANTED IN PA AREA
The possibility of starting a scheme of breaking up sections in the Pa area to settle returned Maori ex-servicemen was referred to the under-secretary of Maori Affairs, Mr T. T. Ropiha, by the Wairaka Tribal Committee at a meeting at Whakatane last week. After details of the scheme were outlined -Mr Ropiha said he could see no objection to it and thought there was every chance of it being brought into operation. The committee was represented by Mr A. O. Stewart, who outlined the proposed scheme. He pointed out that there were some large areas in the Pa area that would make ideal building sites and it was hoped to settle returned men there. However, the difficulty was in the acquring of the land and it was suggested that the sections might be purchased by the .Department of Maori Affairs, which could then sell the land back to the Maori settlers.
Mr Ropiha said he thought the scheme was a good one. The Department could purchase the land and sell it back afterwards.
He promised to plface the proposal before the Minister of Maori Affairs for consideration.
