HIGHEST PRAISE OF ARRANGEMENTS FOR RUGBY MATCH

The Tauranga Union had no hesitation whatever in giving the highest praise to the complete and adequate arrangements made for the Bay of Plenty-Australian Rugby game at Whakatane last year, the president, Mr G. H. Fisher, l-stated in his report presented to the annual meeting of the Tauranga Rugby Sub-Union. All had come away after a good match fully contented that the Bay union had risen to the occasion and made a good job of a task that had looked very formidable.

Took Union To Task Mr Fisher referred to the dispute over the venue of the game and declared that Tauranga had been reluctantly compelled to take the Bay of Plenty Union to task over the allocation of the Bay of Plenty versus Australia match.

He alleged how, in the first place, it had been proposed to hold the match either at Tauranga or Rotorua but Tauranga had been given the choice by the New Zealand Rugby Union. On the question coming up for discussion at the Bay of Plenty executive meeting the venue of the match was changed to Whakatane. This was achieved by a majority of seven votes to three. After much debate and correspondence between the Bay of Plenty and the Tauranga unions it had been finally decided to appeal to the N.Z.R.U. for a ruling regarding the match. Unfortunately for Tauranga and the Bay Union, the appeal had been held up by the Bay executive who had finally apologised for not complying with repeated requests from Tauranga to forward the appeal. This apology, continued Mr Fisher, had been received in good faith. Then Too Late

Eventually the N.Z.R.U. had received the appeal and although it was then too late for anything further to be done in the matter, a final letter had been received from the N.Z.R.U. This had left no doubt that the game was to have been held in Tauranga as far as the N.Z.R.U. was concerned.

There was no doubt, continued the speaker, that the whole affair had been very disheartening and the sequence might be harmful in the future.
