Composers Show There Is Plenty Of Money In Music
Songs believed to number more than 1000 • helped Jerome Kern whose will has just been published three years after' his death to leave more than £220,000. He was one of the richest song-writers of all time.
Victor Herbert left only £7130 When he died in 1924. George (“Rhapsody in Blue”) Gershwin who died in 1937 left £40,000. Lionel Monckton, who made Gertie Miller famous, married her and gave London “The Quaker Girl” and “The Dancing Mistress,” left £79,000. Sydney Barnes—he set the world dancing to the waltz “Destiny”— left £2OO. Albert Chevalier who wrote “My Old Dutch” left £75. Jerome Kern, an American of German descent, wrote the music for 40 record-breaking musical shows and nearly a dozen films. Probably his biggest hit was “Show Eoat.”
Many of his songs sold in millions, among them “Who?” “OF Man River,” and “The Way You Look Tonight.”
