WHAKATANE 2ND IN HIGH SCHOOLS’ ATHLETIC SPORTS

Four of the 16 new records established were bettered by pupils from the Whakatane High School at the Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools’ Athletic Championships at Tauranga on Saturday. Some fast racing, close finishes and demonstrations of friendly school rivalry were a feature of the day and in the final points aggregate Whakatane with 1171- finished second to Tauranga College with 1301. Other schools competing were Waihi, Te Puke, Katikati and Opotiki. Whakatane competitors ,took part in most events and were placed in nearly all races. The records broken by Whakatane pupils were done convincingly in the junior and intermediate sections. They were:— High Jump, B. Lumsden, 4ft 9ins. Intermediate: Broad Jump, J. Wilson, 16ft 9-lins; 880 yards, M. Morice, 2m 19 2-ss; girls’ 100 yards, M. Campbell, 12 l-ss.
