Outsize Tomatoes

There have been many outsize tomatoes grown at Whakatane this year but one of the largest came to light the other day with a total weight of 11b 3ozs. According to the owner the taste was as good as the fruit .(or is it vegetable?) looked.

Y.F.C. Field Day An interesting field day was held recently by the Wainui Young Farmers’ Club on the farm of Mr A. Bradshaw. There were 30 members and interested farmers’present. A demonstration was given of a Fordson tractor with a rotary hoe attachment working in swamp country.

Building Permits Fourteen permits of a total value of £10,502 were issued by the building inspector, Mr F. W. Lysaghf, at Whakatane last month. These included one each for a new office block, block of shops, garage alterations, shed, shed removal, workshop and wash-house. Two applications were issued for additions to residences and shops. Many schools throughout New Zealand are suffering from a shortage of teachers, including schools in the Bay of Plenty. Six schools in the district have a serious shortage. At the Pongakawa Valley School the position of head teacher is unfilled, while assistant mis.tresses are required for the Pongakawa Valey, Maketu, Te Ranga, Otamarakau and Omokoroa schools.

The Board Appreciates The fine, clean state in which the show ground was left after the recent Whakatane and Rangitaiki Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s show was the subject of much complimentary comment at the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Domain Board. It was decided to congratulate the. Society on the success of it’s record show and the way the grounds were left afterwards.

Mice On Mt. Egmont

Egmont’s dog alpinst Bluey recently caught four mice high up in the mountains. Bluey, climbing with his owner, Mr N. Hatwell, chief guide at North Egmont, and Mr P. Julian, disappeared off the track at 5000 ft. and returned with a mouse in his mouth. He repeated the performance 500 ft. further up, j and caught his last two on the summit when the party was resting before descending.
