Fierce Scrub Fire Lights Up Sky
A fierce scrub fire swept through several hundred acres of scrub and bracken covered land adjoining some of the timber plantations at Matahina last Wednesday and finally burnt itself out late that night. During the day huge clouds of smoke could be seen from Whakatane while at night the bright glow from the blaze was reflected on low lying clouds and lighted up ijhe sky to the west of a soft pink. This made an attractive picture for miles around until the fire died at about 9.30 p.m. The fire swept through a large area and went about a third of the way up Mount Edgecumbe on the eastern side before it halted. No serious damage has been reported and it is believed that the fire did not touch any of the plantations.
