Hospital Picnic The annual staff picnic of the Whakatane Hospital is to be held on Whale Island on March 13. As many members of the staff who can be spared will be attending. Licence Transferred 'jThe transfer of the licence of the Commercial Hotel, Whakatane, from N. McG. Bremner to E. G. Hallett was approved by the quarterly meeting of the Bay of Plenty Licensing Committee at Rotorua this week. Street Sealing A length of about 30 chains of James Street, Whakatane, from the intersection with Hinemoa Street is at present receiving a priming coat prior to tar sealing. Whakatane Borough staff expect to complete the work within the next month.

Visit To Murupara A party of members of the Whakatane Chamber oL Commerce is to pay a visit to the Murupara and Galatea districts on Sunday. The party will leave by bus in the morning and after a tour of the area will return to Whakatane later the afternoon. Tour of Australia

Bay of Plenty hockey players will have an opportunity to seek selection in the New Zealand hockey team which is to tour Australia this season. Two trial matches are to be held in Auckland. The first, Town v Country, in May and the second, North v -South, in June. Car Registration Stickers

Windscreen stickers for motor registration purposes will again be used for the 1950-51 licensing year, said the Minister of Transport, Mi Goosman this week. Owing to delays in delivery it would not be practicable to make the general reissue of steel plates until next year, be stated. 1

U.S. Engineer’s Visit After spending about two weeks at the Maraetai hydro-electric scheme, Mr Andrew Simonds, senior engineer in_the American Bureau of Reclamation, is visiting Roxburgh, where he is discussing methods of grouting the schist rock country in the vicinity of the dam with engineers of the State HydroElectric Department. Members Thanked Appreciation of the work done by all members and their assistance •- to her during the year was expressed by the president, Mrs G. Hewitt, at the annual meeting of the Wai- _ mana Women’s Institute. Together with the secretary, Mrs C. Wylde, she was presented with sprays of flowers and small gifts from the Club by R. Looney.

The Old ‘/Boys” The older members of the Taneatua and Ohope Bowling Clubs who , met at Ohope on Tuesday were old in age, if nothing else. Their playing gave the impression that they were far from being aged and decrepit but their ages showed they were getting on in years at least. The ages of players of both teams, four in each, totalled 598 years.

Lending a Hand Several members of the Whakatane Saint Andrews Pipe Band will be playing with the Opotiki Pipe Band -at a band and marching competition to be held at Opotiki tomorrow. The Whakatane players will help to swell the numbers of the Opotiki band, which has not a large membership at the present time. Land Court Sittings Tiie Waiariki Maori Land Court (Rotorua) is to sit at Whakatane and Opotiki four more times at either place during the next 12 months until February of next year according to the Gazette. The dates for Whakatane from which the court will sit are: May 16, August 15, November 14, February 13, 1951. The Opotiki dates are: May 30, August 8, November 21. February 27, 1951.
