Judgment Summons The following judgment summons order was made by Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Whakatane Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Peter Te Paire to pay James W. Goodhew Ltd./ £2O 7s 8d and costs £1 11s 6d forthwith, in default 20 days’ gaol. Caused Collision For driving a car at Whakatane without undue care and attention and causing a collision Florence Rawhiti Le Lievre, (Mr Otley) married, Whakatane, pleaded guilty before Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Whakatane Magistrate's Court yesterday and was fined £l. costs 12s. Protection Of Land The main preoccupation of the Maoris today was the protection of their lands, Sir Apirana Ngata. emphasised at a recent meeting of Maoris with the new Minister of Maori Affairs, the Hon. E. B. Corbett. This question had come to the forefront s of the people’s minds in recent months and years, he added. Population Gains Though thousands of New Zealanders every year leave for overseas the country continually gains in population from new arrivals. Returns from the Census and Statistics Department show that from April to November last year 11,593 people entered the country and only 4709 left.
Similar Offences Convictions and fines of 10s, costs £l, were each imposed on Andrew James Jesperson, farm hand, and Samuel Thomas Conway, garage proprietor, both of Edgecumbe, by Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., at Whakatane yesterday. Both pleaded guilty of having sold a motor cycle and failing within seven days of the sale of notifying the Deputy Registrar of Motor Vehicles of the changer of ownership. Porker Competition Two pigs owned by Mr P. Clark, Nukuhou, were judged first and second by Mr F. Barwell, Bay of Plenty District Pig Council supervisor, at a porker competition arranged by the Waimana and Wainui Young Farmers’ Club at Nukuhou on Monday. These winning pigs are now to be sent to the Horotiu Freezing Works where they will be killed and dressed and judged against animals from other parts cf the Auckland Province. ~ v Wasp Nest At Awakeri A fair sized wasp’s nest was found yesterday beside the road in front of the farm of Mr W. W. Wheatly, Awakeri, dn the Te /Teko-Awakeri • State highway. Wasps have been seen in increasing numbers in that area for some time how and residents of the district are being ask- * ed by the Department of Agriculture /to watch out for the insects and to destroy all nests as soon as possible after they are found. The nest discovered yesterday has been destroyed.
