WOMEN’S ROOMS
Sir, —As a frequent visitor to Whakatane I am more and more appalled at the state that the women’s rooms are in on the occasions that they are used by myself and other members of my family. The number of rooms is more than adequate in my opinion but none of them are at all prepossessing nor do they have proper facilities, especially in a town where the visitors more often than not have to travel many miles over hot dusty roads; after such a trip a decent “wash and brush-up” is welomed by the majority of people but it is Virtually impossible to obtain this in any of the women’s rooms with any degree of comfort. Gn many occasions the floors
have been found extremely wet and dirty and it is not very nice to have to place one’s handbag, gloves, etc., on such a flood as this. Admittedly one might use the toilet boxes for this\purpose but this is hardly suitable and it is not always easy to place one’s parcels here. Could not a shelf or stand of some kind be put in the separate toilets where shopping could be safely and conveniently housed. It was hoped that when the new toilet room was built at the Rock that some better facilities might be provided but this has not been the case. True, the building is newer ’ but that is perhaps all in its favour as the toilets themselves are very dark and the wash-bowl and mirror are in very public places, especially when there is a bus in at the stand. Surely it would not be too much trouble to instal liquid soap dispensers and paper towels' and perhaps some means could be devised where a nominal sum could be paid for the use of such facilities. This might seem a very trifling matter to some people but one does not have to be over-fastidious to appreciate clean and tidy toilet rooms with reasonable facilities. Yours etc., HYGEIA.
