Maoris Did Not Kill Off Morioris

The Maoris did not, contrary to popular belief, kill off the Morioris and take away their land, according to Mr Roger Duff, director of the Canterbury Museum.

As the population of New Zealand at the time of the arrival of the main Maori fleet has now been estimated at at least 10,000, and as the total fleet consisted of only eight canoes, the “invaders” would not have had a chance against such overwhelming odds, Mr Duff explained. In any case, he said, there was no need for a conquest, as the new arrivals were kinsmen of the previous inhabitants and there was plenty of land and food for all.
