3713 Tons Increase In N.Z. Export Meat Killings This Year
Wellington, Feb. 18. Export meat killings for the period October 1, 1949, to January 28, 1950, are 3.713 tons in excess of the corresponding period for last season, states the New Zealand Meat Board. Heavy killings of lambs have been a feature of the last four weeks operations, with the result that slaughterings are approximately 90,000 ahead of the corresponding period *of last season. Average weights, however, continue to decline and now show a drop of nearly fib per lamb compared with last year. Weights for other classes of stock compare very favourably with those of last season, but in those cases the main flush of killings has not been reached. North Island Details Export killings for the North Island to January 28 are set out below with the corresponding figures for the previous season in parentheses:— Lambs (C/cs) 3,472,146 (3,496,354), Wethers (C/cs) 143,769 (89,143), Ewes (C/cs) 159,149 (262,294), Beef (Qrs) 42,590 (15,783), Pigs (C/cs) 90,764 (82,452). Average killing weights to date for the North Island are:— Lambs 34.91 (35.72), Wethers 63.78 (60.94), Ewes 60.03 (59.42).
