School Closed Because of a failure in the water supply the Maketu School has been closed by the headmaster, Mr F. Orgias. About 160 children have been affected. The water position has been troubling the school for some considerable time.
Building Controls Following amendments to the building controls the Wh&katane Borough Council has now been empowered to issue permits for certain classes of work to picture theatres. i These include maintenance, fire reinstatement work, alterations, additions and internal fittings not exceeding £SOO in cost.
Building Permits Seven building permits valued at £3,980 were issued at Whakatane by the borough building inspector, Mr F. W. Lysaght, last month. These included two for residences and one each for additions to residences, wash-house, additions to workshop, shed removal and a pumphouse.
24-Hour Grill Room An application to establish a 24hour grill room at Whakatane was declined by ,the Whakatane Borough Council because the proposed building did not comply with the brick building by-laws. It was felt that the restaurant envisaged, which was only a temporary building, would create a fire hazard. Not Overtaxed Although the Domain camping ground does not comply with the regulations under the Health Act, the health inspector, Mr A. R. Knights, told the Whakatane Borough Council that the number of campers in residence at any one time was always fairly small. As a result the facilities available were not overtaxed. Building Inspector The appointment of a separate building inspector for the borough was mentioned by the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, at the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council. Building was increasing steadily and it was considered that there was now enough work to warrant an inspector, even if only part time. The question was left for consideration by the Works Committee.
Surf Club Congratulated The success of the Whakatane Surf Club’s women’s team at the recent New Zealand Surf Championships was mentioned at the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council by Cr A. O’Rourke. They had done a wonderful job and had put Whakatane on the map. He thought some recognition should be given them by the Council. It was decided to send a letter of congratulations to the club. No Daily Express
