LITTLE CHANGE IN LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOL ROLLS
Although there has been an increase in the rolls of some schools in the district most have remained the same or are still settling down. There have been no large scale changes although since a free bus has been provided to the Whakatane High School many European pupils have left the Paroa Maori School to come to Whakatane. In the Maori schools headmasters have pointed out that although their present figures differ from last year they should begin to settle down to normal within the next month. Of. all th,e primary schools Whakatane has the largest roll with a total of 650. This number includes 608 at the main school, 27 at Ohope and 11 at the hospital. The headmaster, Mr A. H. Fryeprßaisher, said he expected further changes yet before the school settled down to normal. The figures for other primary schools in the district are:— Awakeri: The roll at present stands at 170, which is about the .same that the school ended , with last year. Edgecumbe: From 221 at the end of the last term the roll has dropped slightly to 200 *but an increase is expected. Manawahe: When school started :27 pupils attended, eight less than the number which ended the 1949 year.
Matata Maori: There has been little change in the roll. At present it is 133. A decrease of two from last year. f Paroa Maori: Although some pupils have been lost to the school the present roll now stands at 146. It should increase later as many children of the district are still known to be on holiday. < Taneatua: There has been a slight drop from last year’s figure of 165 but the present roll now stands at 153.
Tawera Maori: The roll of this Rijgtoki school remains almost the same. At present it numbers ' 122 while at the end of last year it was 123. It is not expected to change Very much from now on. 1 Te Teko Maori: There has been a definite although slight increase with the roll now at 225. Last year the final term ended at 210.
