Murupara House Burned Down
The home of Mr and Mrs D. Waugh, of Murupara, was burned down on Monday. The alarm was first given by Mrs G. Cawte, who saw smoke clouds rising from the direction of the house. Whilst the Forestry fire-fighting squad was being sent for, customers from a nearby store rushed along to try to assist. They found smoke pouring from the kitchen, where the fire had evidently started, but were unable to get into the other parts of the house owing to the smoke and heat. When the Forestry Fire Brigade arrived, under the command of Mill. Collins, they were able to save two nearby furnished baches and then concentrated their efforts on preventing the fire from spreading over the tinder-dry paddocks. The house could not be saved. Mr and Mrs Waugh were away for the day, but efforts were made to contact them and have them return home as soon as possible. The cause of the fire is unknown.
