Televised Opera Presented In States
A new television programme featuring condensed versions of worldrenowned opera is being presented in the United-States. Titled the Opera Television Theatre, it is televised by the Columbia Broadcasting System. 1 First opera in the series was George’s Bizet’s “Carmen,” shortened to about 1 hour and 15 minutes presented time. The title role was sung by Gladys Swarthout, American soprano. Other roles were filled by Robert Merrill and Robert Rounseville. Boris Goldovsky, operatic director of the Berkshire Music School and Music Festivals, stages the performance. Artistic director of the series is Lawrence Tibbett, Metropolitan Opera Company baritone l . Additional operas are planned for presentation at 1-month intervals. Scheduled for future programmes are “Emperor Jones” by the American composer Louis Gruenberg, with Mr Tibbett in the title role, and Puccini’s “Tosca.”
