Topdressing In Early Autumn Is Advised For Lambs
Early-autumn topdressing to increase autumn and early-winter growth of grass and thus increase winter carrying capacity is recommended in the Seasonal Notes in the Journal of Agriculture. Earlyautumn topdressing is important on both fat-lamb and dairy farms, for on North'lsland fat-lamb farms winter pasture growth determines the ewe-carrying capacity and on dairy farms it limits the amounfj of feed which may be saved during winter and held for early-spring feeding of the herd. Some soils require phosphates only, some phosphates and lime, and some potash in addition to phosphates or phosphates and lime. The soils of New Zealand have now been named, mapped, arid tested for fertiliser and lime requirements, and farmers should consult their local Instructors in Agriculture about the fertiliser requirements of their soils.
The time of application of lime is not as important as it is for fertilisers. Lime gives its main response during dry summer weather and lime may be applied at any convenient time.
