SHEET LIGHTNING DISPLAY SEEN ALL ALONG BAY COAST
The bright flashes of sheet lightning seen over the sea from Whakatane between Whale -'and White Islands on Sunday night were also witnessed in several places along the Bay of Plenty coast. At Whakatane the brilliant lightning effect was noticed on only one night but at Mt.. Maunganui it was seen on both Saturday and Sunday nights. Some people in that locality thought White Island was again becoming violently active but local meteorological offices have confirmed that the display was sheet lightning. According to one officer the lightning was probably accompanying a heavy cloud bank far out to sea and as it drew away the. lightning receded'. No thunder was heard, probably because of the distance of the cloud from the shore.
Accompanies Warm Weather Sheet lightning is sometime? called summer lightning and frequently accompanies warm weather in temperate climates. It is an almost daily occurrence in tropical regions.
It appears as a diffused glare lighting up a whole cloud and is often of a reddish colour. It is believed to be caused by discharges of feebler intensity than those caused by forked lightning. It is occasionally merely the reflection on cloud of a distant thunderstorm. While forked and sheet lightning are the gigantic analogues of the spark and glow from an electric machine, another form—ball lightning—is as yet unexplained.
