Bay Of Plenty Farms Need More Rain
Rain is wanted by farmers in all parts of the Bay of Plenty, and other districts. While townspeople and holiday-makers revel in the hot dry weather, the lack of rain is the farmers’ biggest menace.
According to dairy company officials, production is falling although so far, figures are npt very much below normal for this period of the season. Rain at Christmas and New Year has helped to halt the decline, but if further rain dods not fall soon, there will be a very pronounced drop in production: . The continuous drying wind, is even having an effect on the paspalum pastures arid it is also noticeable that growth on well sheltered paddocks is suffering as a result of the dry spell. To the untrained eye there is an appearance of plenty pf feed, but once the pasture becomes fibrous, instead of a source of milk supply, it becomes a maintenance ration.
