PAPER FERTILISER BAGS CHEAPER NOW THAN JUTE

A request to the fertiliser works to allow farmers to return used fertiliser bags direct to the works, instead of through agents, has been declined by the works, on the grounds that such a system would prove unweildly, stated Mr E. J. Vosper who represented the Bay of Plenty Province of Federated Farmers on the Auckland Composite Fertiliser Committee.

A report from the works also pointed out that in view of the rise in the cost of jute bags, the position in regard to jute and paper bags had been reversed and it was now cheaper to use paper instead of jute. \ This position had been brought about, Mr Vosper explained, when Pakistan had not devalued her currency. \ Farmers would now get their fertiliser in paper bags, 20 to the ton, for the same price as they would pay for the product in jute bags, 12 to the ton.

In reply to complaints received from farmers, that they were receiving short weights in some bags, the works pointed out that a number of the bags being returned by the farmers were not the correct size. This created difficulties in filling and sewing the bags and the works pointed out that any deficiency would be made up by the works, if reported through the farmers’ merchant.
