Dictaphone Put Thief In Custody
It was a dictaphone that had been stolen. Johannes Hecker got two years’ goal in Dusseldorf for having stolen it, and three “fences” were goaled for periods ranging from four to six weeks. What embarrassed the four defendants was hearing the dictaphone give evidence against them because thejy had not turned it. off. The first fence had insisted on testing it before buying it. Then it passed through the hands of two more fences, dutifully absorbing the details of each deal. But the third picked an honest buyer who, having listened in, took the disc to the police. The police finally got back to Hesker by arresting each purchaser in turn, except the last honest citizen.
