When Mr Walter Hadlee, captain of the N.Z. cricket team which so brilliantly toured Britain last year, preached in Knox Church, Christchurch, recently he described things he had observed overseas during the tour and drew parallels between ’cricket as it should be played and life as it should be lived. “There is a tendency in Britain towards playing cricket on Sundays when week day workers can attend right through. Most such games still are not organised competitions, however. We refused request after request to play in Sunday charity matches. For I am sure, personally, that Sunday sport is a cancerous growth that will ultimately stifle any community that goes in for it.”
