Old Bowling Club Member Farewelled Before Leaving N.Z.
On Saturday afternoon opportunity was taken by the president of the Whakatane Bowling Club, Mr C. Good, to farewell one of the Club’s oldest members, Mr J. Hellyar, who leaves shortly on a visit to England. Mr Good mentioned Mr Hellyar’s 29 years with the club as an active member and he congratulated Mr and Mrs Hellyar on just passing their 40th wedding anniversary. He presented Mr Hellyar with a travelling rug, and Mrs Hellyar with a cheque from members of the Club and wished them a pleasant voyage. Six other old members of the Club spoke and made reference to the departing couple’s popularity. They were Messrs W. R. Sloane, R. F. Smith, C. Loane, G. Caisley, W. Howat and A. Shaw. Mr Hellyar responded and thanked members for their gifts and expresed the wish to be back again before long.
