TWO TITLES WON BY WHAKATANE IN SCHOOL TENNIS

Featuring devastating strokes from a two handed backhand R. Mahy, Whakatane, proved to be the outstanding player in the annual Bay of Plenty secondary schools championships held at Whakatane. Still under 15 years of age Mahy went through the tournament undefeated aryl in the senior boys’ singles final he ' defeated B. Gray, Te Puke, convincingly 9/3. Players from the Whakatane District High School competed in all the competitions and were successful in taking two titles. Beside winning the senior boys’ singles the school took the senior boys’ doubles when R. Heta and J. Wano beat M. Reed and H. Grady, Waihi, 9/4. Whakatane players also reached the finals of> the junior boys’ doubles, the senior girls’ singles and doubles and the junior girls’ singled. i ■ '

The schools sending representatives to the tournament were: Tauranga College (T), Waihi High School (Wai), Te Puke (TeP), Whakatane (Wh), Katikati (K) and Opotiki (O) District High Schools. Well over one hundred competitors took part in the championships which were most successfully conducted.' Detailed results of the tournament., were:—
