Lights Again The lights under the verandahs of the shopping area at Whakatane are to be connected for the Christ--mas and New Year period. This was stated by the electrical, engi- 4 , neer, Mr F. Lysaght, to the month- j " ly meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council. { Red Cross Tea Set The Bay of Plenty was successful in winning the silver tea set com- x petition recently held by the Red Cross throughout New Zealand. The winning ticket was number 10638, purchased by Mr Robbie, of Tauranga, according to advice received at Whakatane yesterday. P.B.A. Presentation To Headmaster \ A presentation of a fine travelling trunk and a suitcase was made by members of the Whakatane District < High School to the retiring headmaster, Mr I. B. Hubbard, at the school yesterday. Two finely constructed leather articles the trunk and suitcase were well appreciated by Mr Hubbard, who thanked the staff for their gifts. At Tuesday evening’s r meeting of the Club Rotarian E. T. Dawson, organiser of the committee responsible, again expressed his appreciation of all the assistance the Club had had in the effort, not only from its own members, but from all manner of helpful people.
Keen Young Rider With the Ohope sports, the Pony Club gymkhana and the show in prospect, “horsey” people are getting keener and keener. An 1 example: .On Sunday a girl Pony Club member from the Thornton district, Miss L. Moore, rode 20 miles altogether to take part in' competitions at the Light Horse rally at ! the Whakatane Domain. She rode splendidly all day in open company, and was rewarded with third place in the senior jurhp. v ;, -
Wandering Artist , Mr W. Dreghorn, Whakatane’s wandering artist, lias written back to friends here to say that he has just enjoyed a long holiday in France, on foot and at a nett cost of 30/- a week. He SEjys -it pays one to. go alone, because that way one must learn French, and can mix better with the people. Mr Dreghorn is still making his headquarters his native England, and said that while acros the Channel he had painted a number of views of Brittany. 1
