More Accidents With Horses
The increase in highway travel in the United States since cars replaced horses as the/ chief means of conveyance is noted by the Automobile Manufacturers’ Association. In 1909, the ‘ peak year in horse travel in the nation, there were abonut 26,000,000 horses and mules on the nation’s streets and roads and they travelled a total distance of about 13,000,000,000 miles. This year, 43,500,000 motor vehicles in the country are expected to travel an all-time record distance of 425,000,000,000 miles. The National Safety Council reports that the nation’s current rate of deaths caused by motor vehicles is seven for each 100,000,000 miles of travel. In 1909, the rate of deaths caused by horses or horse-drawn vehicles was 30 for each -100,000,000 miles of travel.
