Favourable Reaction To Recommendations Of Commission
Local and district reaction to the recommendations of the Licensing Control Commission is generally favourable. There is t general satisfaction being expressed that the Commission was sufficiently impressed with this district’s claims for more accommodation to authorise an extra hotel at Whakatane as well as one at Edgecumbe. It is felt that the provision of a wholesaler’s license here will fill a Long-felt need. The recommendations in regard to Te Teko ».and Taneatua are also Likely to meet with general public approval. Both ..those districts - have outgrown existing facilities. Naturally, there is widespread speculation as to who will get the hew licenses, and so far as Whakatane is concerned it is generally conceded that the building and equipping of a modern three-star hotel presents a formidable .financial obstacle for any private individual to overcome. It will be recalled that it was suggested at the time evidence was the Commission that it might be possible for a new hotel to be built and run as a public enterprise, with the profits used for public utilities. We might yet hear more of that idea. The alternative seems to be to hand the license to one of the large outside concerns.
