MANAWAHE CALF JUDGING HAS RECORD ENTRIES
A large crowd of parents and friends gathered to watch the animals paraded and judged at the annual calf club show of the Manawahe School. It was considered that the entries this year almost constitute a record for the school. They comprised 19 calves, four yearlings and nine lambs all in good condition and showing the effects of care and attention they had received from the children over the past three months. Messrs A. H. Adams and S. G. Ker judged the calves and yearlings and Mr W. Bowes judged the lambs. In keping with the educational aim of the calf club movement the judges spent some time in explaining to the children the good points of the various animals and why certain ones were chosen as winners in their particular classes. At the conclusion of the judging, Mr W. D. Jones, chairman of the school committee, thanked the judges for their assitance, the women who had provided and served the lunch and then presented prizes and certificates won during the day. In the evening a successful dance was held to raise funds to assist in providing transport to take winning animals to the group field day at Otakiri today.
