HARBOUR BOARD TO TAKE LAND FOR A QUARRY AT HEADS

Despite strong objections by residents in the area by both Pakeha and Maori the Whakatane Harobur Board has decided to go ahead with 'W.-its original plans and take a certain amount of land at the Heads for a quarry- It will be taken under the Public Works Act. This decision was reached at Friday’s bi-monthly meeting of the Board following receipt of a letter from certain Maori landowners in the area, who pointed out that they intended to fight the Board. Previously the Board has asked the Maori owners if they would be willing to exchange other suitable land, which could be used as a quarry. The Maoris had replied that While some owned other property they were not prepared to offer it in exchange. Mr W. Hunter considered the Board should go ahead and take the land under the Public Works Act. He moved a motion in this direction and was supported by other Board members.
