Brownings In N.Z. Almost As High As Road Fatalities
In an endeavour to acquaint the public with the major causes of drowning accidents the National Committee of Swimming and Lifesaving, together with the Physical Welfare and Recreation branch of the Internal Affairs Department and other interested bodies, is running a campaign from mid-Decem-ber to the end of February to encourage the exercise of due caution and thereby reduce the number of fatalities.
Over the last six years the number of lives lost through drowning accidents has almost equalled the number lost through road accidents. The drowning statistics for these years are (road accidents in parentheses): 1943, 107 (152); 1944. 115 (142); 1945, 102 (128); 1946, 139 (191); 1947, 135 (206); 1948, 124 (196). Total, 720 (1015).
