WHAKATANE SHOPS WILL CLOSE EARLY ON ELECTION DAY
The procedure for the general' ■election on Wednesday will be similar to that which has been followed on previous occasions. All shops V< f v at Whakatane will be shut, by 1 p.m. All industries except those classed as essential 'are required to be closed by 2 p.m. to enable staffs to vote. Those essential businesses ' that are not closing down will be required to allow their staffs a reasonable amount of time to vote Without deduction of any pay. The closing arrangements of businesses in each town are left to the local retailers’ associations but it is necessary that business premises should be closed by 2 p.m. A clause in the Statutes Amendment Act makes this compulsory. Whakatane housewives will have ' to do their shopping on Wednesday morning as it is quite likely that some shops will close at lunch time. Banks at Whakatane will be closed on Wednesday and all hotels will be unable to sell liquor after noon. Where schools are required for polling booths, pupils will have a day’s holiday. w Essential services such as the Most office and transport organisa-. Ftions will remain open as usual.
Beacon’s Hours The Beacon office will close at midday Wednesday. It would therefore be a help if copy for replacements of display advertisements for publication on Friday could «be brought in tomorrow.
