®® 9 ® 0 LABOUR’S POLICY WILL GUARANTEE i I LABOUR put thousands of farmers on their feet by adjusting mortgages and lowering interest rates. Labour’s policy has brought unparalleled prosperity and stability to the farmer. The Labour Government is the best assurance that these benefits will be safeguarded. Labour will maintain the Guaranteed Price with fair rewards for the dairy farmer. It will continue the present arrangement under which the industry has a fifty per cent voice on the Dairy Products Marketing Commission in fixing the price to the farmer and the marketing of butter and cheese in New Zealand and overseas. In co-operation with the primary producers, it will adhere to the policy of bulk sales and longterm contracts for meat and dairy produce. Labour will safeguard the Pool Accounts for the benefit of the primary industries. Labour will promote discussions between the Commonwealth Governments with the objective, in agreement with growers, of the orderly marketing of wool. Labour recognises the land as the source of New Zealand’s wealth and mainstay of her high standard of living. Accordingly it is vital for the farmer to have security and stability. In co-operation with the Primary Industry, Labour has guaranteed the essentials of that security. The Land Act (1948) gave a rational system of long-term leaseholds, and made the freehold available to Crown land occupiers for the first time in New Zealand s history. * Labour will ensure that farmers are financially protected against natural disasters beyond their control. Labour enables the farmer to buy land at its productive value, and it will continue to prevent land speculation and aggregation and inflation of land values, to secure the farmer against the debt and disaster that followed the First World War. Overall price control and stabilisation legislation will continue to keep down his cost of living and the cost of his essential farm requirements—implements, fertiliser, etc. Labour will continue actively to promote the welfare of people living in the country, end will devote special attention to social amenities including educational facilities for their children, mail services, electricity reticulation and country roads. Under Labour the farmer can see and plan well ahead, not only for himself, but also for his family. Wot© Again THE NEW ZEALAND LABOUR PARTY 18
