EARLY PURCHASE OF PHOSPHATES COUNSELLED

Because of the congestion of the transport of wool, livestock and other produce likely over the Christmas period, there would be little jjjh? chance for adequate transport for superphosphate after Christmas, and farmers should endeavour to get superphosphate now, urged the secretary of the Bay of Plenty Province of Federated Farmers, Mr E. J. Vosper, at a three-monthly meeting at Whakatane of the province's executive. The president, Mr S. A. Wells, reporting on meetings of the fertiliser committee at Auckland, mentioned that the suggested freight subsidy, on fertiliser railed from the wharf at Tauranga or Whakatane to the farmers' nearest station, had been flatly refused. Mr Wells said that the matter was being pursued, however, with some hope" of success. Acute Storage Position The superphosphate storage position was acute, he added. Stores were already jammed with supplies and a congestion of transport was likely after Christmas. Delivery was easy now. %JMr Wells mentioned a deferred Jlayment scheme to enable farmers to purchase superphosphate supplies This question, however, .would/have to be referred back to the three companies and no decision was likely before Christmas. He was "sure the scheme would prove a considerable help and he wished it could be, implemented this year. Referring to the suggested fertiliser works for Tauranga, Mr Wells said he thought the question should be gone into very carefully as Whakatane had a harbour and might like a fertiliser works for themselves. initial cost of the works would be high. Farmers, he said rust wanted cheap manures and to be able to buy it when they wanted it. ■•
