Obituary

MR W. J. EIVERS

The death occurred at the Whakatane Hospital on Friday of Mr William Joseph Eivers one of Whakatane’s oldest residents. Born in Ireland he was the third son of the late James and Mary Eivers of Tristenagh Abbey, Westmeath, Ireland. The late Mr Eivers came to New Zealand in 1880 in the sailing ship Taracora, the voyage taking several months. After a short stay at Auckland he came to Whakatane to take a position on the Opouriao estate. Later he bought an area of land known as Maraetotara, portion of which bordered the Ohiwa Harbour. He farmed property for over 40 years eventually selling it to the Native Department. About 18 years ago he retired from farming and has been living in Whakatane ever since. He was a staunch supporter of the Roman Catholic Church.
