Americans List Of Rules For Conduct In United Kingdom

New rules of conduct for United ‘States airmen serving in Britain have been drawn up by men of the Third Air Division. Here are their 11 points:— 1. —Don’t be over-talkative and familiar. Maintain the proper uniform at all times. Be a credit to your uniform. 2. —Keep out of Black Markets. j 3.—Tip sensibly. Lavish tipping antagonises the vast majority of people here, who cannot compete with it. 4. —lf you go in for “clip joints” (gambling places), etc., be sporting enough to take the financial consequences. 5. —Don’t “gripe” about ration or currency regulations or protest about the non-American size of food portions. The people in this country do not like it any more than you do. Treat Women With Respect 6. Don’t judge a people by its small fringe of shady characters and Black Marketeers. Treat people, especially women, with the respect they deserve. 7. —Don’t judge a whole people by a few anti-American troublemakers. If you happen to run into an unfriendly incident, handle yourself with composure. 8. —Steer a middle course—neither boast about America nor apologise for it. 9. Remember that Britain’s distinctive character lies in tradition, and thaf its present . standard of living is considerably below its normal standards. 10. —Don’t flaunt your rations or boast of their quality or price. 11. —The most important thing you should be certain to have at all times is a sense of responsibility as 1 an American. The airmen were reminded to “take advantage of the many cultural, historic, and scenic opportunities and advantages available to you here in the British Isles. You may never get this chance again.” j
