PUBLIC NOTICES FIREWORKS DISPLAY GUY FAWKES DAY, NOVEMBER 5 & At the end of McGarvey’s Road, Whakatane. Turn off by Dr Cole’s residence into Beach Street. The gatekeepers will direct you to the right place'. November 5, 1913, Guy Fawkes celebrations were started at Len Luke’s Farm, Awakeri, by three families. Each year these celebrations grew better and brighter and the general public came first by the dozens then hundreds and finally thousands and hundreds of motor cars. All children received crackers free and the more money received, the bigger was the display of fireworks the following year. The family man soon realised it was cheaper* and better to take the children out for a really enjoyable evening. The last bonfire carried out ' at Luke’s Farm, Awakeri, just before world’s war II broke out was 65ft. high. This year’s bonfire will not be anything like that on the sth. But it is a start and if the public of Whakatane and district turn up on Saturday night, November 5, a very much bigger and brighter fireworks display will be something to look forward to on November 5, 1950. A canvass was recently made of principally McGarvey Road to collect funds for the fireworks. Thirty-four persons were interviewed and the sum of £25 was collected, The above sum represents', an average of 14/8i per person which .is a' credit to this locality and certainly stirred up enthusiasm in Len Luke to get going again. About the middle of November a meeting will be called to go into the business of setting up a committee representing all local bodies and school committees. A collection will be taken at the gate and if each motor car or person will contribute any sum from 5/- up all will be helping to buy more fireworks for a bigger and brighter display for November 5. 1950, when free crackers will be distributed to all children by the various school masters. If you have fireworks for your children bring them along. Small bonfires will be started at 8 p.m. The large bonfire with the Effigy of Guy Fawkes on top will be lighted at 8.15. Fireworks display to commence at approx 8.35. Come one, come all. and bring the kiddies. Remember, if the kiddies enjoy themselves, we do and the more we are together the better and brighter the evening. 280
