What is believed to have been a killer whale was seen in the Bay of Plenty early this week just off Hawai, 16 miles east of Opotiki.. It caused some excitement among the local populace and played off the shore for a considerable time. Left-Foot Accelerator A left-foot accelerator pedal for automobiles has been patented in the U.S.A. It is designed for the comfort of motorists to whom, on long drives, it is argued by the inventor, a change to left foot operation would be “a real relief.” Ur ewer a Investigation A An investigation into the in.cid-|. ence of dental and mouth disease among children attending schools in the Urewera district was carried, out last week by Dr'Hewat, dental research officer. He was accompanied by Mrs Hewat. It is hoped that by making a comparative survey of children’s teeth in a wide variety of districts, causes of dental disease and factors in their prevention will be discovered. Annual Brigade Dance
Preparations are now well advanced for the annual dance of the Whakatane Fire Brigade to be'held in the Winter Show building bn Wednesday night. One of the most popular events of the year the dance is held to raise funds for the brigade and also' to buy Christmas presents for the children in the hospital over Christmas. This year efforts are being made to surpass all previous dances in novelties, decorations and supper. Benefit Concert
Sponsored by the Whakatane Rotary Club, a non-stop variety concert is being organised for the'benefit of the Crippled Children’s Society, and will take place in the Grand Theatre on December 6. Leading local artists are to take part, and the theatre has been offered rent-free for that night. A strong team of volunteer workers has been recruited, and the venture has every prospect of outstanding success. He Had Some Too Although one of the older members of the Whakatane Citizens’ Band, Mr J. Pyne, was unable to attend the annual reunion last week. He nevertheless was able to taste some of the outstanding food served up for the dinner. Mr P3 r ne has been in the hospital for some months and members of the band decided to send him some of the dinner on a special tray. This was duly despatched and according to all reports was more than appreciated.
