What is believed to have been a killer whale was seen in the Bay of Plenty early this week just off Hawai, 16 miles east of Opotiki.. Preparations are now well advanced for the annual dance of the Whakatane Fire Brigade to be'held in the Winter Show building bn Wednesday night. One of the most popular events of the year the dance is held to raise funds for the brigade and also' to buy Christmas presents for the children in the hospital over Christmas. This year efforts are being made to surpass all previous dances in novelties, decorations and supper. Benefit Concert

Sponsored by the Whakatane Rotary Club, a non-stop variety concert is being organised for the'benefit of the Crippled Children’s Society, and will take place in the Grand Theatre on December 6. Leading local artists are to take part, and the theatre has been offered rent-free for that night. A strong team of volunteer workers has been recruited, and the venture has every prospect of outstanding success. He Had Some Too Although one of the older members of the Whakatane Citizens’ Band, Mr J. Pyne, was unable to attend the annual reunion last week. He nevertheless was able to taste some of the outstanding food served up for the dinner. Mr P3 r ne has been in the hospital for some months and members of the band decided to send him some of the dinner on a special tray. This was duly despatched and according to all reports was more than appreciated.
