Truman Tribute Spotlights Political Activity Of Women

The tribute paid by President Truman in a recent speech to women’s work in public activities in the United States focuses attention on the continuing emergence of women all over the world in national and international affairs, in politics and social welfare. Truman’s testimony came in connection with an observance of the admission of women to the Executive Committee of the. Democratic Party National Committee, but his remarks referred generally to the achievements and growing acceptance of public responsibility of women of all major political parties. The ceremonies in connection with which he delivered a nation-ally-broadcast radio address specifically noted five women recently appointed by the President to public posts, four of them in international meetings. The five are: ; Mrs Franklin D. Roosevelt, one of/ the U.S. Representatives to the U.N. General Assembly now in session at Lake Success. Mrs Ruth Bryan Rohde, former U.S. Minister to Denmark, an alternate delegate to the General Assembly. Mrs Charles W. Tillett, and Miss Martha B. Lucas, members of the U.S. delegation at the fourth general session of the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation in Paris. Mrs Georgia L. Rusk, former member of the U.S. House of Representatives, named one of three members of the War Claims Committee. Other outstanding U.S. women holding public office include one Senator, eight members of the House of Representatives, the Treasurer of the United States, the Director of the Mint, the Minister to Luxemberg, the Assistant Surgeon General of Public Health, a member of the Federal Communications Commission, and a member of the Civil Service Commission.
