" One of the many pre-election stories going the rounds at the present time is'that about the wellknown (and amply proportioned) Maori from the EastGoast who was asked how the political situation with the East Coast Maoris stood. He thought the National Party, of which he has a member, would win the seat this time.

“I never talk Social Security and State houses,” said the gentleman by way of explanation. “That no good with the Maori, I say, ‘You think there is a chance this time of the Holland beating Fraser?’ And they say, ‘Yes.’ Then I say, ‘Well, what’s the use of four Maori members and not one in the Government?’ ”
