Bowling

CLOSE PLAY FOR SMITH STARS There was a good, gathering of bowlers at the Whakatane Club’s green on Saturday, and some very interesting games were played. Probably the keenest match was for the Smith Stars, when P. Smoljan’s team, last year’s holders of the Stars, held off a strong challenge from a team lead by the club’s president, C. W. Good. In the first 11 heads, Smoljan had to “hill” five ends with well placed drives. At the 15th end Smoljan lead 20-8, then Good’s team rallied and at the 20th end the score was 20-18, leaving Good to get a “three’ on the last £nd. However the pace was too hot and Smoljan came out winning 21-18. V ; During the afternoon members observed a moment’s silence for the late Messrs P. Bridger and C. H. Christensen. Games resulted:— Smith Stars: R. Stewart, D. Butler, E. Grant, P. Smoljan 21, W. Compton, E. Johnson, C. R. Coates, C. W. Good 18. Other games: H. W. Morgan, J. Whitehead, H. Cantrell, W.
