War’s Toll On British Women

Medical tables in the RegistrarGeneral’s Statistical Review, just published, show that more women than men civilians in England and Wales lost their lives in 1944 through “operations of war.” Total civilian war deaths were 9.329 (females, 4,814), including 103 resulting from previous wars. This was an increase of 6,327 over the previous year, but fewer than half the numbers in either of the two years 1940 and 1941. In 1945, the last year of war, there were 2,4.04 war deaths, including 107 from previous wars.
