STEADY DEMAND FOR NEW BUTTER RATION COUPONS
A steady demand for the new butter coupons when they were first released was experienced by the Whakatane Post Office on Wednesday and continued yesterday. For the first two days the issuing staff were kept going all day and the applications were just about double the figures recorded when the coupons were last issued. On Wednesday there were 403 applications, which was 200 more than the first day last year while yesterday there was no slackening. By early in the afternoon there had been 300 applications made. Most people who made application at Whakatane were housewives and quite a number chaffed at the bother of having to go the counter to obtain the application forms. It was explained however, that when the forms were put out a large number were lost and often some confusion arose when different members of one family came in with forms.
The new coupons will last for the next 12 months and before they can be obtained application has to be made on the special form obtainable at the post- office. The old coupons must be produced before new ones are issued.
At Whakatane about 5,000 are expected to be issued and the office will have fulltime staff issuing them until October 22, after which application will have to be made to the main counter. But by that time it is expected that most people will have received their new coupons. The ration coupons are to be issued at the Kopeopeo Post Office from Monday until next Friday. Slightly greyish in colour the new coupons can be used from October 24.
