Controlled Tipping At Town Dump Wanted By Health Inspector

“The public and carriers generl"> ally appear to be co-operating to a much greater extent now, and most .of the refuse dumped is over or hear tf/’the tip face,” reported the sanitary ' inspector, Mr A. R. Knights, to the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council on Monday night, -x

“The tip is in as good order as is possible under the present circumstances and looks better after the Borough workmen have spent about half a day tidying up. However until the area is properly fenced, tipping by all the sundry limited to certain stated times and days, weekend tipping discontinued and controlled tipping in operation, the place will never be satisfactory. •Controlled tipping will be much cheaper in the long run, will reclaim the low-lying areas just as quickly and in a better way, and there will be no places for rats and flies to breed. Mr Knights said that half-burnt foodstuffs on the tip are a great attraction for flies, and while the present warm spell continues flies will breed rapidly.. Spraying with Murtons arsenical sheep dip and with D.D.T. will help to prevent, to a large extent, the fly menace, but it should not be necessary to go to the expense of regular spraying.
