Month's Gaol For Theft Of Beer From Shed
An effort to supplement the beer supply for a party at which he had been a guest on Saturday night ended disastrously for John Tutahi Paki who was sentenced to a month’s gaol when he appeared before Justices of the Peace at Whakatane yesterday and was convicted of the theft of three cartons of beer belonging to Mr J. Barnes, Edgecumbe, and with mischief, damage to a lock on Barnes’s shed door. Police told the Court that Paki and at least one other had broken into the shed and taken the beer out. Neighbours who were disturbed by the noises accosted Paki, who dropped the carton he was carrying and broke it on the road. The other cartons were found cached near the shed. Though there were others in the escapade, Paki was the only one positively identified. He was convicted and discharged on the mischief charge.
