HOROSCOPE IS NOT FAVOURABLE TO EVEREST CLIMBING

A 12-year-old boy, who is supposed to possess “all the wisdom of the ages,” has pronounced that the horoscope for Mount Everest climbing is unfavourable for some years * —and it may now be a long time before approval is given for another attempt to conquer the mountain. Spiritual Head

The boy is the Dalai Lama, civil and spiritual head of Tibet. His permission must be obtained before any expeditions can tackle Everest, every climber’s dream.

An official of the Alpine Club in London says that the idea of a British expedition has been “pigeon holed.” They still hope that some day the ban will be lifted, and that Britons will get first chance to attack the world’s highest mountain —29,140 feet. Many climbers who have been hoping to succeed where so many others failed now fear that they yvill be too old too achieve their ambition before they get an opportunity to try. There is a feeling that the boy ruler, regarded as almost omnipotent, is influenced by the State oracles, anxious not to allow foreigners to enter the country. Undying Ambition

The ambition of mountaineers to conquer Everest is undying, and they still hope to get a chance of proving they can complete the climb nearly made by G. L. Mallory and A .C. Irvine, who .vanished in the mists near the summit in 1924.

The effort will depend on the whim of the boy whose names mean: Tender Glory, Mighty in Speech, Excellent Intellect, Absolute Wisdom, Holding to the Doctrine, Ocean Wide.
