EDGECUMBE TAR SEALING

Sir, —I crave both your indulgence and your space to explain on behalf of my Executive Committee' and myself what appears 1 to have misled your leaders—particularly your Edgeeumbe readers—regarding the tar sealing proposals for the roads in the vicinity of Edgeeumbe. As the president Chairman of the Edgeeumbe Progressive Association Incorporated, I felt that I had definite reason to believe that the position as outlined by me in the annual report was correct. The report was both considered by my Executive Committee, as reported by you, and read at the annual general meeting, passing on both occasions without its accuracy being challenged. , In view of the almost indignant repudiations with which this published statement was met by the Whakatane County Councii, I made it my business to make careful enquiries and also to seek the opinion of the previous chairman. I find that due recognition in official quarters of our needs, and some definite assurances of support, have caused our publication of it to outstrip the actual authorisation of these works. In view of the fact that the needs of this growing township make such tar sealing almost a minimum requirement, I trust that the report was inaccurate only slightly in point of time. Please accept this letter as an apology to you, Sir, if my report has been the means of having brought into question either your own or your reporters’ accuracy in such matters. Yours etc., HARRY M. CARTER, Chairman, Edgeeumbe Progressive Association Inc.
